A Cobb County deputy is going to jail – not as a guard, but as an inmate.
Sgt. Kristopher Travitz is one of two Cobb County deputies arrested earlier this year for having sexual contact with female inmates at the Cobb Adult Detention Center. Travitz, a 14-year veteran, pleaded guilty Monday to charges of aggravated sexual battery, sexual assault, violation of his oath and making false statements. He admitted having sexual contact with two female inmates in 2010 and 2011.
In one case, investigators said the female inmate went to Travitz’s Douglasville home while wearing a GPS tracking device on her ankle. Travitz denied that initially, but later when confronted with evidence from the ankle bracelet he admitted the truth. The bracelet confirmed that the woman had indeed been there for 45 minutes.
Sentenced to a total of 15 years, Travitz will spend five of them in prison.
The other deputy accused of having sex with inmates, 51-year-old Alvin Southerland, is awaiting trial. He is charged with aggravated sodomy, aggravated sexual battery, sexual assault by a member of law enforcement and violation of his oath of office.
