The westbound lanes of Ga. 316 were shut down Thursday morning after a car collided with a tractor-trailer at a Gwinnett County intersection.

The crash happened shortly about 6:45 a.m. when a westbound car slammed into an eastbound tractor-trailer that was turning left onto Hurricane Trail., Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter told the AJC.

The car, a Nissan Maxima, ended up wedged beneath the truck, Ritter said.

Gwinnett fire Capt. Eric Eberly said his department’s Technical Rescue Team used air bags and large timbers to raise the tractor-trailer off the ground and stabilize the truck. They then dragged the Nissan out from under the truck and cut the driver out of the mangled Maxima.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition, Eberly said.

The westbound lanes of Ga. 316 were shut down, causing a huge traffic jam for motorists headed toward Atlanta.
