An Arctic airmass moved into Metro Atlanta Friday morning, tumbling temperatures into the 20s throughout the region.
The lowest temperature at the Atlanta Airport registered at 28 degrees, marking the coldest morning since February 20, 2021.
Temperatures dropped to the low 20s throughout the Metro and North Georgia, with Waleska in Cherokee County registering an 18 degree reading as of 8am Friday.
While this is the coldest so far for the Winter of 2021-2022, it pales in comparison to January 7, 2014 when the actual temperature registered 6 degrees at the Atlanta Airport. This is still the officially coldest temperature for January 6 in Atlanta’s history.
Meanwhile, other January mornings have registered negative digit temperatures in previous years.
Looking ahead to next week, temperatures are expected to drop again into the mid to upper 20s after a cold front pushes through on Sunday night.
