3 Georgia football takeaways regarding the update Blue-Chip Ratio numbers

Brock Bowers 2022 National Championship

If you want to understand why the Blue-Chip ratio matters as much as it does, one only needs to look at last year’s national championship game. Georgia exceeded the 50 percent threshold, while TCU did not. As injuries mount over the course of a 15-game season, the Blue-Chip Ratio helps illustrate which possible teams have the depth to make it through the season and possibly come out on top.

Georgia won the national championship game 65-7, overwhelming TCU over the course of four quarters. Georgia’s back-ups were able to find the end zone and get stops with ease. Even after losing double-digit players to both the NFL draft and transfer portal, Georgia is once again well above the 50 percent mark.

Per Bud Elliott of 247Sports, 77 percent of Georgia’s roster is made up of either former 4-star or 5-star recruits. That ranks third in the country, behind Alabama at 90 percent and Ohio State at 85 percent. Georgia’s 2022 team also had a 77 percent rate.

In total, 16 teams in college football have a roster that is made up of more 4-star and 5-star recruits than 3-star and 2-star recruits. Per Elliott, and the college football seasons have borne this out as every championship winner since 2011 has been above the 50 percent mark, those are the 16 teams that can win a national championship this season.
