UGA Vet School conducting tests after illness closes animal shelter

Researchers in the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine are working with test samples from the animal shelter in Cobb County, where some dogs and cats are have fallen ill over the past week. Some have died.

From WSB TV…

A Cobb County animal shelter is waiting on test results after being forced to shut its doors.

Channel 2′s Chris Jose took a closer look at what might be the cause of animals getting sick.

The shelter, which will be closed until they determine the cause of the mystery illness, said they should get results from UGA by Friday.

Still, some people came to the shelter not knowing pets were sick.

Lance Dudkowski showed up at the shelter, which had a “closed” sign posted, to pick up a cage after an Animal Control officer picked up some stray cats near his home.

“I hope they’re okay,” Dudkowski said. “I hope they can figure out what’s wrong with it and find an easy cure for it.”

The shelter closed last Friday and the county says an unknown illness affected dogs and cats in the shelter.

A spokesperson confirmed a half-dozen pets are sick.

The shelter’s vet ordered tests and sent samples to the University of Georgia.

In the meantime, the county says employees at the shelter will take care of the animals.

The county says due to COVID-19, the shelter is open by appointment only, and no drastic changes were needed to close down.

As of now, there are 94 dogs and 163 cats in the building, with six reportedly sick.
