Alex Murdaugh indicted on more than 20 financial fraud charges related to housekeeper’s death

A federal grand jury has indicted convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh on 22 financial fraud-related charges in connection with his former housekeeper’s death, prosecutors say.

According to media reports, the charges include that Murdaugh, a former South Carolina attorney, cheated his late housekeeper’s estate and insurance carriers out of nearly $3.5 million.

“Trust in our legal system begins with trust in its lawyers,” U.S. Attorney Adair Boroughs reportedly said in a statement. “South Carolinians turn to lawyers when they are at their most vulnerable, and in our state, those who abuse the public’s trust and enrich themselves by fraud, theft, and self-dealing will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Longtime Murdaugh housekeeper Gloria Satterfield died in Feb. 2018 following what had been described as a “trip and fall accident” at the family’s hunting property, Moselle.

Murdaugh previously claimed that one of his dogs got under Satterfield and caused her to fall, hitting her head, Murdaugh said at the time.

Earlier this month, Murdaugh’s lawyers revealed that he “invented” the story about a dog causing Satterfield’s fatal fall.

“No dogs were involved in the fall of Gloria Satterfield on February 2, 2018,” according to statements made by Murdaugh in court documents filed on Monday in federal court. “After Ms. Satterfield’s death, Defendant invented Ms. Satterfield’s purported 2 statement that dogs caused her fall to force his insurers to make a settlement payment, and he stated that she was not on the property to perform work.”

The documents were filed as part of a lawsuit filed against Murdaugh by an insurance company accusing him of committing insurance fraud in relation to the Satterfield fall.

Murdaugh has been accused of stealing settlement money from the Satterfield children and pocketing it for himself.

Earlier this year, on March 2, a jury found Murdaugh guilty of murder in the 2021 shooting deaths of his wife, Maggie, and his son, Paul.

At a news conference, lead prosecutor Creighton Waters said to “let this be a warning – no matter who you are, if you break the law, the truth will come out and you will be brought to justice.”
