COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News has learned a student from Kennesaw State is one of the 153 victims in the deadly Halloween crowd surge in South Korea.
According to Kennesaw State University Officials, Steven Blesis was among the 153 victims killed in the incident on Oct. 29.
Officials told Channel 2 Action News Blesis was an international business major and was one of 11 students from KSU in South Korea as part of a study abroad program. All other KSU students are reported safe.
“On behalf of the entire Kennesaw State community, our thoughts and prayers go out to Steven’s family and friends as they mourn this incomprehensible loss,” said Kennesaw State University President Kathy Schwaig. “We have been in contact with Steven’s family and have offered all available resources of the University to them.”
The University has made available counseling support to students who have been impacted by this tragedy through Kennesaw State’s Counseling and Psychological Services.
Officials said there were 100,000 people attending the festivities in Seoul, which was the first no-mask Halloween event since the COVID-19 pandemic, the BBC reported.
The crowd surge was South Korea’s deadliest disaster since 2014, when 304 people, mostly high school students, died in a ferry sinking.
