Probe continues into corruption in Gwinnett County government

Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter says the investigation into corruption in Gwinnett County government is continuing after last week’s admission by District 1 Commissioner Shirley Lasseter that she took bribes from an undercover agent.

Porter says while he asked the feds for help in his corruption investigation five years ago, he was shocked to learn the details surrounding Lasseter’s case. She admitted to taking more than $35,000 in exchange for her help in a fictitious land deal.

“I didn’t know exactly what they would find, but I knew we would find something,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish. Under Porter’s watch, former Commissioner Kevin Kenerly is fighting his second indictment that he took bribes from a developer over a land deal and former Commission Chair Charles Bannister resigned rather than face indictment for perjury.

“There were issues with that particular group of commissioners for some time,” he says.

And Porter says it’s not over.

“The United States Attorney’s Office, the FBI, and my office is still looking at aspects of corruption in Gwinnett County and there are investigations that are ongoing and will continue,” he says.
