Gwinnett courts warn of jury duty scam

Website outlines details of jury duty scam

Have you received a text message or email saying you've missed jury duty?  Gwinnett County Clerk of Courts Richard Alexander has put a warning up on the courts website about the scam that has hit other parts of the state.

"They tell them they've missed their jury service and that they have to call this number and pay a fine for failing to appear," he tells WSB's Sandra Parrish.

Alexander says in reality, the jury clerk would first send a letter asking the person to come to court.  Then if that didn't work, a sheriff's deputy would pay a visit asking them to appear before a judge to explain their absence.

He believes the scammer plays on a person's fear in order to gather their personal information to commit fraud.

"That's just purely bogus," says Alexander.  "No court operates that way in the state of Georgia or probably anywhere else."
