A brand-new tree-top ropes and zip-line course in Tennessee is declared unsafe after an 18-year-old from Cumming dies from a fall on the course.
Gregory Horan slipped off a suspended log a week ago at Ijams Nature Center in Knoxville. He wound up dangling in the air with a safety harness cord around his neck.
His sister, who was on the Navitat Canopy Experience course with him, screamed for help. By the time he was lowered to the ground, he was unresponsive. Emergency responders administered CPR and he was rushed to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. The 2015 Lambert High School graduate died Wednesday.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports police were alerted to the incident by the ambulance operator, not employees of the course.
State inspectors suspended the operating license of the course, citing safety issues. The attraction remains closed. It had just opened July 17, featuring multiple courses and zip-lines.
A third-party inspection this week found problems both with the design of the safety lanyard and the height of the safety line. The course had previously been certified by another inspection company.
Navitat Canopy Adventures has released a statement expressing condolences to the Horan family. "We are devastated by this loss," the prepared release states. The Asheville-based company pledges its full cooperation in the investigation.
