1 dead, several wounded in Atlanta shooting

One man was killed and several others wounded today in a predawn shooting in northeast Atlanta.

The shooting happened about 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of Bell Street and Auburn Avenue.

Atlanta police on the scene told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that one man was dead and another was critically injured.

Capt. Paul Guerrucci, head of the department’s homicide unit, said just before 6:30 a.m. that investigators were still trying to sort out the exact number of people shot.

“An officer on patrol was flagged down in regards to some people that had been shot,” Guerrucci said. “Once he started his investigation, he learned that at least four people sustained gunshot wounds.”

One of the wounded men later died, he said, adding, “various victims are in surgery right now.”

The names of those killed and wounded have not been released, but Guerrucci said they were all men in their mid-20s or older.

Investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting.

“We believe that the actual shooting happened on Bell [Street] and the victims ran from the location and that’s where they were located by police, on Auburn Avenue,” Guerrucci said.

Auburn Avenue remained closed near the Downtown Connector at 6:30 a.m. while police investigated the shooting.
