CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA — A Cherokee County woman has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after a jury found her guilty of child abuse.

A North Georgia jury convicted 35-year-old Candice Nicole McClure following an investigation that began in April 2023. The case started when an elementary school teacher alerted authorities to concerns about possible abuse involving a student in her class.

Investigators say the student told the teacher that McClure kicked, punched and choked her.

The report prompted an investigation that ultimately led to McClure’s arrest and prosecution.

Assistant District Attorney David Bailey praised the teacher’s actions, calling her a hero in the case.

Officials say the report was critical in bringing the abuse to light and ensuring the child’s safety.
