Family of Cobb teen killed by cop confused by shooting

Tendai Nhekairo

Parents of the 18-year-old shot and killed by Cobb County police Tuesday night say they still do not know what happened.

Cobb County police originally said Tendai Nhekairo, a student at nearby Campbell High School, was naked and was carrying a gun at the Riverside House Apartments on Shadowood Parkway.

Police said they had to shoot Nhekairo when he threatened them.

“Officers had to take that immediate action and stop that aggressive act,” Sgt. Pierce said. “Officers were confronted by him with a weapon. It was at that point when officers used that force necessary to stop that aggressive act.”

But now police say the 18-year old lunged at them with a knife during the standoff.

The youth's father, Mubasa Nhekiaro, tells Channel 2 Action News, "I'm having a real hard time accepting the reality and also just piecing together what could have gone wrong last night so it could escalate to the point of him being shot and killed."

Residents at the Riverside House Apartments near Windy Hill and Powers Ferry Roads were evacuated around 7:40 p.m. and kept out of their homes for hours. No one else was hurt.

“I’m in a state of shock,” a resident told Channel 2 Action News. “It’s scary to think that someone that’s your neighbor did something like this.”

Per protocol, the officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave. The deadly altercation is being investigated by Cobb County Internal Affairs.
