For a Georgia defense that had to replace a lot of star power, there hasn’t been much drop-off. The Bulldogs rank second in scoring defense and boast strong rankings in total defense and yards per play allowed.
A big reason has been the play of safety Chris Smith. One of the few returning starters from last season, Smith has been everywhere for the Bulldogs. He’s picked off two passes while also recovering a fumble this past weekend against Vanderbilt.
His sensational play earned him a spot on both ESPN’s and CBS’s midseason All-American teams.
“Smith’s consistency and experience have been vital to a Georgia defense that ranks second nationally in scoring defense (9.1 points per game) and third in total defense (247 yards per game),” ESPN’s Chris Low wrote. “The 5-11, 195-pound senior has three tackles for loss, two interceptions and one fumble recovery.”
Smith has started every game for Georgia, while also helping freshman sensation Malaki Starks at the other safety position. Both players have shined in their first season working with new safeties coach Will Muschamp.
Jim Nagy of the Senior Bowl also identified Smith as one of the biggest risers in terms of their draft profile as well.
