Q: Will metal edging be effective to keep Zoysia grass out of our flower beds?

Zoysia lawn

A: Georgia turf grass specialist Clint Waltz joined my show this past Saturday, and this question was a hit! Clint says to bury the edging at least 3-4″ deep so that the underground rhizomes of the grass can’t get through. But there are still above-ground stolons/runners that crawl and spread. Carefully spray those or use an edger from time to time.

Soon, weeds too will be appearing in flower beds. Keep them at bay with a thick application of mulch, 2-3″ is ideal. If the ground has been recently disturbed, all that does is bring more weed seeds to the soil surface, so lay newspaper or cardboard down under mulch for a better barrier. Also, proper timing of a preemergence herbicide application, a product like Preen, helps stay ahead of the next season’s weeds.
