On Air

Q: My pothos houseplant’s leaves are quickly starting to yellow. What is causing this?

Repotting houseplants in fall

A: Same thing was happening to the ‘Devil’s ivy’ hanging over my garden tub. The amount of sunlight it was receiving hadn’t changed, and I was still watering it as needed. Remembering that I’ve had it in the same pot for about 4 years (the hanging basket it came in, as a matter of fact), I cringed to think what the roots looked like inside.

Sure enough, the poor thing was root-bound! Plus, most of the nutrients in the soil had probably leached out over time, so it was time to repot! Select a pot that is only 1-2″ larger than the pot any houseplant is currently in. Introduce fresh soil, cut away any dead vines or leaves, and water right after repotting. Also, provide a light application of fertilizer now.

While we’re on the topic of houseplants, now that nighttime temperatures are getting down into the 40s, it’s a good idea to beginning bringing in those houseplants that have enjoyed time outside this summer. Make sure they’re in a room that provides adequate light and that they’re not kept near a vent or drafty door. Some may even benefit from being in a room with a humidifier.
