Each year, I remind listeners to the radio show to prune most roses around Valentine’s Day. Seems easy to remember, right? Well even I didn’t follow my own advice and just cut mine back on February 28th. Yes, there is a lot of new growth, but I still cut back everything but for 4 or 5 strong canes, and it all got whacked down to about a foot high. By early summer, my Knock Outs will be right back to 4-5 feet high!
Remember to disinfect pruning shears before moving plant to plant. Also, it’s not a bad idea to remove the cuttings, fallen leaves and expired blooms from under the rose bush as part of good sanitation practices.
