On Air

Q: I have a bluebird house. They nested in it last spring. Should I clean it out? And when?

Bluebird (Jim Bearden)

I reached out to my friend Jim Bearden, the Bluebird Guy, at Green Meadows Preserve, just to be sure, and he says, yes! “It is the perfect time to clean them out. And clean them after each brood fledges during the nesting season, which is March through August.”

Many bluebird houses or nest boxes have a door that opens. Using a gloved hand, clean out the contents and dispose of it. Bluebirds are beginning to scout out good real estate right now, so a clean nest box will be that much more attractive to them.

If you’re interested in bluebirds, visit the bluebird trail at Green Meadows Preserve in W. Cobb. Jim is offering walk & talk tours on the following Saturdays in 2023 - March 4, April 29 and June 3. For more information, visit his website HERE.
