A: Given the mottled look of the leaves, almost mosaic in shape and size, this is characteristic of Rose mosaic virus (RMV). This is not due to any neglect on the homeowner’s part. The virus was likely present when the rose was grafted, and any kind of environmental stress made it surface.

It could also potentially be an early sign of Rose rosette virus. Unfortunately, the rose is unlikely to survive either, as over time, the virus will move to all parts of the plant. It is best to immediately bag and remove the plant. Do not plan to plant any roses in that soil in the near future. And use caution to not contaminate other roses using gloves or tools that touched the infected plant.
