Q: Several of our oak trees have discolored leaves. Some are now starting to turn brown and curl. What is happening?
A: This is a prevalent issue noticed by many around metro Atlanta right now. This destruction is caused by oak leafminer. Recently, I had Seth Hawkins of the Georgia Forestry Commission on my radio show discussing this phenomenon. Leaves are displaying large, white splotches, primarily on white oak trees here in north Georgia.
Seth tells me, “Oak leafminer is a native pest that is just flaring up this year. If your trees are happy and healthy otherwise, they’ll put out a flush of new leaves after this has run its course, and everything should be back to normal.” Hopefully that means we can still enjoy the beautiful fall color of ours oaks this autumn!
