JOHNSTON, R.I. — After weeks on the lam, an elusive 1,500-pound steer that escaped while being delivered to a slaughterhouse last month was captured Friday morning, police said.

Johnston Police said owner Ledyard Lewis corralled the fugitive cow and returned it to his Connecticut farm, the Providence Journal reported.

Police Chief Joseph Razza said the cow was not injured, WLNE reported.

The steer ran off Feb. 4 as he was being delivered to a custom butcher shop.

The bovine was seen multiple times since its escape, including by an Uber driver who saw it while waiting at a traffic light. Police said they did not have the capability to chase it, WJAR reported. Their goal was to keep it confined to wooded areas to keep people from possibly getting injured.

It is unclear what will happen to the cow now.

A petition to “Retire the ‘Johnston Cow’ to a sanctuary” had more than 12,000 signatures Friday afternoon.

“This guy wants to live so badly and we think he’s earned the right to live out the rest of his days in peace, at a sanctuary,” organizer Victoria Ferruccio-Flores wrote.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
