WHIPPANY, N.J. — Bayer Corp. on Friday issued a voluntary recall of select unexpired Lotrimin AF and Tinactin spray products due to the presence of benzene in some samples of the products.
The affected products, distributed between September 2018 and September 2021, include those with lot numbers beginning with TN, CV or NAA, according to a recall notice issued by the pharmaceutical giant.
“Benzene is not an ingredient in any of Bayer Consumer Health products. It is important to note that Bayer’s decision to voluntarily recall these products is a precautionary measure and that the levels detected are not expected to cause adverse health consequences in consumers,” the company stated.
The recalled products were all packaged in aerosol spray cans and distributed in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico through a variety of retail channels, Bayer confirmed.
Classified as a human carcinogen, benzene is both naturally occurring and manmade and can cause cancers, including leukemia, as well as blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Exposure to the substance can occur orally, through the skin or via inhalation, the agency stated.
