(SAN FRANCISCO, Ca.) — Ever since the first videogames first came home in the late 70s and early 80s, there have been some pervasive stereotypes about what kinds of people play them, and what kinds of attitudes they hold about others.

Fandom.com released a new survey, highlighting how much of the popular wisdom about who plays videogames is long outdated. A sample of some 15,000 people in Fandom’s userbase revealed that the generation who plays the most games might not be what you expect.

The favorite was Gen Z, but Millennials beat them out, with a full 52% identifying videogames as their top recreational hobby.

The survey indicated that younger gamers are more interested in competition and interacting with friends, while older gamers tend to gravitate towards more intellectually-stimulating games.

For parents who play with their kids, over half (56%) choose to engage as an activity to do together. Another 41% indicated that they’re gamers themselves, and enjoy the chance to share their hobby with the youngsters.
