Its’ been long-rumored, but Georgia Attorney General Same Olens interviews Tuesday with the Board of Regents to become the next president of Kennesaw State University.
In a letter to the KSU community, University System Chancellor Hank Huckaby says while he initially planned to conduct a national search, he had “sincere and earnest conversations with Olens and believes he should be considered for the position at this time”.
The confirmation comes amid protests by students on campus Monday who oppose Olens’ defense of Georgia’s ban on gay marriage and his joining a federal lawsuit over the Obama Administration’s decision to allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms with which they identify.
Others call it a back-room deal.
“We feel like the process hasn’t been transparent,” says Sarah Rose.
One lone supporter on campus was pleased with the idea.
“He’s a good man. He’s got the connections to get the money to keep this institution viable and growing,” says Thomas Sample.
The Board of Regents’ Executive and Compensation Committee will be conducting the interview at the University System offices.
In his letter, Huckabey says while the interview will be conducted in executive session, Olens “is being seriously considered for the role of president”.
It has also been rumored that Gov. Nathan Deal may tap Economic Development Commissioner Chris Carr to replace Olens as attorney general.
