Demons resembling singers Olivia Newton John and Barry White told Hemy Neuman to kill Rusty Sneiderman in the parking lot of a Dunwoody preschool, so his lawyers claim.
The defense attorney’s in the high profile case said Thursday that Neuman was out of his mind and did not know right from wrong at the time he pulled the trigger. Neuman admits to the murder, but his attorneys say he should be in a mental facility instead of prison.
“The jury will have to decide the if the claims of fantasy figures are genuine delusions or a contrived set of images designed to secure jury sympathy,” WSB legal expert Ron Carlson said.
Neuman, 49, is charged in the murder of Russell "Rusty" Sneiderman on November 18, 2010. Sneiderman was gunned down outside of Dunwoody Prep, after dropping his son off for day care.
Andrea Sneiderman, the wife of the victim who is alleged to have had an affair with Neuman, is expected to be one of the first witnesses to take the stand. Andrea was Neuman’s co-worker at GE Engery.
Sneiderman was in the courtroom when her children were mentioned as part of Neuman’s defense.
"Mr. Neuman was compelled by his delusional thoughts to save the children, who he thought were his children, from emotional trauma that they would suffer at the hands of Mr. Sneiderman," defense attorney Doug Peters said.
"There's absolutely no evidence here at all of insanity or delusional compulsion. It's the defense we've been given to fight. If he wants to say that's not what they meant to say in the report, we are so fine with that it's not funny," Chief Assistant District Attorney Don Geary said.

Prosecutors contend Neuman shot Sneiderman because of an affair Neuman was having with Sneiderman's wife, Andrea. Neuman allegedly stalked Rusty Sneiderman in the weeks before the killing. Investigators say on the morning of the murder, Neuman pulled his rented minivan into the parking lot of the day care center and, when Sneiderman walked out of the building, shot him. Neuman was, reportedly, wearing a fake beard as a disguise. Fibers matching those from a synthetic beard were found in the van after it was located.
Jury selection was completed Thursday. 12 women and four men make up the group that decides Neuman’s fate. The four alternates will not be chosen until deliberations start.
Opening statements in the case are set to begin Tuesday morning. The trial is expected to last about four weeks.
Neuman's attorneys also asked a judge Thursday to sequester the jury so they can be shielded from "intense media attention." Four of the jurors will be alternates.
Hemy Neuman faces life in prison without parole if he's convicted.
