A teenager, who was driving on a restricted license, and her mom are charged in the crash that killed a Fulton County teacher and injured two others. Fulton County police say the charges may be upgraded to vehicular homicide.
Shireen Haynes, 41, died Monday after the car she was in was pushed into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer on Camp Creek Parkway near Campbellton Road.
Haynes was a math teacher at Sandtown Middle School. Another teacher, Kay Price and her husband James are hospitalized in stable condition. Investigators say James picked up the two women after school.
Police say the wreck was caused by a teenager, whose mother told her to drive the car and she would follow behind, a Fulton County police spokeswoman said. Police say the girl should not have been driving alone. She had a restricted license.
Authorities say the teen lost control of her car and collided with a Saturn, which was pushed into the path of the truck.
"It's still a preliminary investigation. The traffic investigators will probably be working on this for several days," Detective Melissa Parker with the Fulton County Police Department said.
The teenager, whose name has not been released, will be charged with failure to maintain lane, driving on a restricted license and suspended registration, police said.
Channel 2 Action News reports the teen’s mother is Sireeta Collins. She faces a charge of allowing an unauthorized driver to operate a vehicle.
Charges for both the teen and her mother could be upgraded to vehicular homicide, police said.
