Suspect in deputy shooting (Georgia Bureau of Investigation)

DECATUR COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, along with multiple other state and local agencies, is conducting a manhunt for a man they say shot a south Georgia deputy, leaving him in critical condition.

The incident happened Feb. 27 along the Florida/Georgia border. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said a deputy in Seminole County, Fla. was attempting to conduct a traffic stop on two suspects for reckless driving. The two men, identified as Troy Arthur Phillips and Brad Phillips, were in a white Chevrolet pickup trucks with Florida tags.

The two men refused to stop and a chase ensued. The suspects began to shoot at Seminole County deputies, who returned fire.

The chase continued into Georgia, where Decatur County deputies also joined the pursuit. The suspects drove to a home, where they tried to get in by shooting through a door. The homeowner fired back and the suspects left the home.

As a Decatur County deputy was arriving at the scene, one of the suspects shot at his vehicle. He was rushed to the hospital for surgery and remains in critical condition. His identity has not been released.

The suspects fled away and wrecked the truck a short time later. A Georgia State Patrol helicopter and crew responded to the scene. Brad Phillips, 41, was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Troy Arthur Phillips remains at large.

“An active manhunt is underway by multiple local, state, and federal law enforcement officers.  Phillips is wanted for Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer,” the GBI said.

Phillips should be considered armed and dangerous.

The public is urged to contact the Decatur County 911 center or local law enforcement with information.  Tips can also be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS(8477), online at this GBI website page, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
