Video released of suspect wanted in Gwinnett County correctional officer’s shooting death

Surveillance of alleged shooter of Gwinnett correctional officer released

Police continue to search for the person who shot and killed a Gwinnett County corrections officer early Tuesday morning.

Police believe 59-year-old officer Scott Riner got into a confrontation before the shooting sometime after 6 a.m. Riner’s colleagues found him shot in the parking lot of the Gwinnett County Correctional Center on Hi Hope Road near Swanson Drive.

Gwinnett County Police have since released surveillance video of the person they believe fatally shot Riner.

The newly-released surveillance video shows the suspect in the parking lot before walking away.

Sgt. Jennifer Richter tells WSB Radio that investigators are asking anyone who may have passed through the area between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. to call police. “The area around Hurricane Shoals, around (Hwy) 316. Particularly we are interested in anyone who may have been running dash camera at that time. We’d like to take a look at that footage,” Richter says.

She says there are a couple school facilities in the area from which investigators are looking to check out alternative surveillance video.

As for a possible motive, Richter says it is still too early to say whether this was a random or targeted act of violence.

“People who work at the correctional center, other correctional officers, the victim’s friends, the colleagues, are devastated by this incident,” Richter says. She describes police investigators as “very determined to locate this (suspect).”

Police ask anyone with information to call investigators at 770-513-5300.
