ATHENS, Ga. — Former University of Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett is out of jail Sunday after police arrested him in Dallas, Texas.

Bennett is charged with public intoxication. Dallas Police Department said officers arrested Bennett, 25, after receiving calls about a person banging on doors at an apartment complex.

There was a tinge of letdown looming over fans taking pictures at UGA’s Sanford Stadium Sunday.

“It’s unfortunate, honestly. It really is. I’m a huge Stetson fan. I understand things happen, and he’s a kid, but it’s still, it’s disappointing,” said UGA fan Katie Ware.

Bennett began his career with UGA as a walk-on and eventually led the school to consecutive national championships, UGA’s first in over 40 years.

Another fan, Tracey Lush, said players like this should know their audience.

“You should really know you’re setting an example for young kids, looking up to you,” said Lush. “Yes, you do make mistakes, and that’s part of it. But at the same time, you do have a lot of eyes on you. So, you have to make sure that you’re making responsible choices. When you’re drinking, make sure you have a designated driver, have a friend or something like that.”

Another group at the stadium pointed out, of all places for Bennett to get arrested, it was in Dallas where he was supposed to be working the combine.

“I would expect him to make better choices being out there for the draft,” said Eli Atchley.

Regardless of the draft, the quarterback already earned nearly $1 million worth of name, image and likeness deals in 2022, according to his agent. Fans are now curious if the arrest will deter companies from using him in more advertisements in the future.

“I’m sure that will probably hurt him, unfortunately,” said Ware. “But, you know, everybody makes mistakes, and I do think that people deserve second chances.”

The school has yet to comment on Bennett’s arrest.
