One person was stabbed and another shot Friday at the Mall of Georgia, according to Gwinnett County police.

The incident happened at the Macy’s store, located at 3333 Buford Drive, authorities confirmed. Police identified the suspect, who reportedly stabbed an employee inside the store, as 27-year-old Jose Reyes-Serrato.

Police at the scene told WSB the incident began when Reyes-Serrato began smashing counters and attempting to steal jewelry at the Mall of Georgia Macy’s.

Reyes-Serrato stabbed an employee who tried to intervene and then fled the scene in a car. Gwinnett officers spotted his car and rammed the vehicle. Reyes-Serrato got out and ran toward a nearby DSW.

An officer chased after him, firing and hitting Reyes-Serrato at least once.

Police said Reyes-Serrato is stable. Investigators described the stabbing victim’s injuries as “life threatening.”

The store was temporarily closed and drivers were being advised to avoid the area. The exits from I-85 to the mall were both closed during the investigation, according to police.
