When snow and ice sticks to the road, you have had to change the way you drive.
Tulsa County Sheriff Capt. Bill McKelvey is CLEET-certified and that means he can teach others how to drive.
He showed FOX23 the biggest mistakes that people make when the roads are icy.
"The worst thing you can do is panic," McKelvey said.
Panic is the trigger to the first mistake; hitting the brakes when the car starts to slide.
"You tire will lock up and your vehicle (cannot be steered)," McKelvey said.
The second mistake is overreacting to a slick spot.
"They want to jerk the steering wheel. That's what we call overcorrection. That's one of the worst things you can do,"McKelvey said.
The third biggest mistake is driving into deep snow.
"It can actually get into your grill and radiator which will cause your radiator to overheat," McKelvey said.
He also shared what you should do when driving on slick roads.
"Take your foot off the accelerator and point your vehicle in the direction you want it to go," McKelvey said.
He also advises drivers to take their foot off the gas when driving over an icy bridge.
"Wait until the exit the bridge on the other side before you hit the gas again," McKelvey said.
If the car begins to slide, steer the vehicle in direction you need to go. That means if the rear end is sliding left, steer the car right.
McKelvey said every car should have jumper cables, a blanket or extra coat and a car charger for your phone.
