SWAT teams are currently surrounding a Greyhound bus on the 85 northbound ramp to Indian Trail because of a man inside with a gun.

Police said the man had been behaving erratically and produced a handgun. Some time around 10 a.m., the bus stopped on an onramp, but it’s unclear what exactly prompted the driver to stop.

Police said that at this point, it’s unclear what the suspect wants.

Gwinnett County police said they believe that all 30 passengers on the bus as well as the bus driver got out, but they aren’t 100% certain.

Live GDOT cameras at the scene show a number of SWAT officers surrounding the bus. The air space over the area has been shut down. Police have not identified the suspect or said if he was a passenger on the bus or how he got on board with the weapon.

Greyhound issued a statement around noon, writing:

“We can confirm an incident has occurred on schedule 1076 this morning in Norcross, Georgia headed from Atlanta to New York City. We are working closely with local authorities to ensure the safety of our passengers and driver. We have no further comment at this time.”

A passenger stated that he woke up to find people scrambling to try to escape from the bus. He said he climbed out the window and other passengers scrambled out of a hatch on the roof.

“People went to the top and then they jumped out of the bus,” he said.

The passenger said he thought the driver locked the bus from the outside so that the passengers couldn’t escape.

Another bus is en route to pick up passengers so they can continue to their destination.

All lanes of I-85 SB are currently shut down at Beaver Ruin Road. Drivers are advised to divert at Jimmy Carter if traveling south and divert at Beaver Ruin if traveling south.

It’s unclear how long the highway will be shut down.
