Skeletal remains found near Canton river are 3rd dead body found in area in 5 months

Body found near Reformation Parkway

CANTON, Ga. — The Canton Police Department is investigating after they found the third set of remains to be recovered from the same area near the Etowah River in the last five months.

Police said on Thursday that officers were called out to Reformation Parkway, near the Waleska Street underpass, about human remains being found in the area.

The remains have been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for examination.

On June 21, officers recovered the body of William Watkins in the same area along Waleska Street in the wood line. The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that case a homicide. On July 8, Canton detectives arrested Jacob Huckaby in connection to Watkins’ death. He is still in jail and awaiting trial.

On July 16, officers recovered the body of Pedro Hernandez-Santiago north of Waleska Street in the Etowah River. The ME’s office ruled the cause of Hernandez-Santiago’s death to be an accidental drowning. Toxicology reports determined that Hernandez-Santiago was on methamphetamines.

“There have been no investigative details to show foul play was involved, as the autopsy detailed the absence of trauma to the body,” Canton police said in a statement Friday.

Police did say they are investigating if there are any connections between the Watkins murder case and the remains found on Thursday.

“The Canton Police Department would like to emphasize there is no active threat to the public,” police said.

Canton police ask anyone with information to call (770) 720-4883.
