The parents of the Valdosta State University student who police now say was murdered, are speaking out.
James Jackson, the stepfather of coed, Jasmine Benjamin, spoke to WSB on Saturday. Jackson says the family is upset and frustrated with the conflicting reports they've been given surrounding their daughter's death.
"Closest friends are just saying the last time they saw her is when they dropped her off at her room on Friday," says Jackson.
Jasmine was found dead in a study room last Sunday. Originally authorities told the family she died of natural causes.
Jackson adds that "on the way up to get her belongings, the Police said to come to the station. We went there and they told us it was now a homicide because it was part of the investigation."
Police have now declared foul play in Jasmine's death and say they have several persons of interest, but no suspects.
The 17-year-old's parents say they were shocked to learn she was murdered. She was found unresponsive on a couch in a study room of her dorm.
"It hurts, angry because you just don't know. The questions that you have, who, what, when, and why and how? All that's not answered and you're trying to have a funeral," says Jackson.
Services for Jasmine Benjamin are scheduled for Thursday, 6 p.m. at Levett & Sons Funeral Home's Gwinnett Chapel, 914 Scenic Highway, Lawrenceville.
Jasmine began her freshman year at Valdosta State University in August. She was studying to be a nurse and had hopes of following in her mother's footsteps.
Jackson says, "there's a campus with 12,000 people on it and no one knows what happened to our daughter."
The Central Gwinnett High School graduate was expected home for the holiday. But, her stepfather tells WSB the family was notified just days before Thanksgiving of that the coed's death was a homicide.
Valdosta investigators are asking for the public's help in solving Jasmine's murder. The GBI and FBI have also been called into assist in the investigation.
Anyone with information about the teenager's death is asked to call Valdosta State University police at 229-333-7815 or the Valdosta police crime hotline at 229-293-3091.
