The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office says it investigating reports of a gang that is targeting Asian-Americans and Indians in and around Watkinsville.

The Sheriff’s Office has learned of an organized criminal group that is targeting members of the Asian and Indian community. While these two groups appear to be the primary targets, we ask that everyone be vigilant. This criminal group typically targets the homes of business owners or citizens who may have a large amount of money and valuables in their homes. This has been much more prevalent in the metro Atlanta area, but there have been some incidents in our area. The items that are typically taken include money, jewelry, and other precious metals.

The following suggestions may help you avoid becoming a victim.

• Do not keep large quantities of money at home.

• Avoid carrying large amounts of money on your person.

• Do not let others know you have a large amount of money or valuables at home.

• Place money and valuables in a bank or safety deposit box.

• Ensure personal safes are bolted or secured to the floor and cannot be removed.

• Arm home alarm systems.

• Use video surveillance systems.

• Don’t let others know you are away from home or out of town.

• If you notice a suspicious vehicle or person following you call 911 and do not return home.

• Often times burglars will check to see if anyone is home by first knocking on your door or ringing the door bell. If an unknown person comes to your your residence, make it known that you are home by making noise, turning on a light, or speaking to them through the locked door. If you are not comfortable or are scared, do not open the door to a stranger. If you feel you need help call 911 immediately.
