MARIETTA, GA — The Marietta City School Board voted to put vape detection devices in all of the district’s middle and high school bathrooms.

The CDC says nearly 6% of middle and high schoolers report using e-cigarettes.

The HALO smart sensors detect the chemicals in vape products.

“It looks like a smoke detector in your house,” said Mike Santoro, the District’s Chief Operations Officer. “Instead of detecting smoke, it detects the chemicals frequently found in vaping products.

A silent alert will then be sent to the school administration.

District officials say they hope the new technology will also serve as a deterrent for any students who think of vaping.

Marietta City Schools officials say the funding will come from the Georgia Department of Education grant.
