Invited speakers to the funeral include President Bill Clinton and former Atlanta mayor and U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young.
During a memorial service Tuesday, players across major league baseball talked about Aaron’s life and legacy on and off the baseball diamond. Many said they wanted to make him proud.
“The world is a better place because of Henry Louis Aaron,” said Braves Chairman Terry McGuirk.
A collection of current and former Braves player remembered the trailblazer.
“Got to remember: Facing Gibson, Koufax, Drysdale... guys like that. Pretty intimidating. He said, ‘Chipper, I fear no man when I have a bat in my hand,’” Chipper Jones said.
Baseball historians say Hank Aaron changed the game, and when number 715 went over the fence he changed the nation.
Those who knew him best say what he did was much bigger than baseball.
“That’s why I love and admire and respect Henry Aaron. We all talk about the home runs, but the man off the field was incredible,” said former Braves player Marquis Grissom.
Braves chairman Terry McGuirk and Manfred announced at the end of the service the creation of the Henry Louis Aaron Fund. The Braves and MLB each donated $1 million to start the fund, which is aimed at increasing minority participation in baseball.
