Canada geese settle in for the summer.
Waterfowl biologists with the state Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division say the geese are molting on local ponds and lakes. While they grow new feathers, they are flightless.
Canada geese are notoriously messy, but landowners have limited options. The geese are protected by state and federal laws, so it is illegal to hunt them. It is acceptable to hassle them.
Property owners can try to harass geese off their land by using noise, mylar balloons, or wire or string barriers. Determined owners can apply for a permit to hire a trapper to legally remove the geese.
The molting period typically extends from late June through early July. After that, they may fly off.
