Gwinnett County drivers beware: You could be captured on video if you fail to stop for the red, flashing lights on a school bus.
Installation has begun on the new stop arm cameras. So far, just over 70 have been installed with a total of 300 by February.
"The primary reason we are moving forward with this is to ensure that our students are safe," says school district spokesperson Sloan Roach.
She says in a one-day check in 2013, they counted more than 2,000 violations.
The school district is partnering with RedFlex to install the cameras. The company has been operating its Student Guardian system since 2008. Gwinnett County will be its ninth school system in Georgia. It's also installed systems in Henry and Bartow Counties in the metro area.
"There's no cost to the school system or the county," says company president Tom O'Connor. "Essentially this is an optional program. If you don't want to receive a citation, you don't pass a school bus."
The camera, which is placed on the left side of the school bus, can capture an image of a vehicle five lanes away but it only records data once a vehicle fails to stop when the red lights are flashing.
O'Connor says the cameras generate three hi-resolution still images and a video detailing the incident. The date, time, and location of the incident is also recorded.
A Gwinnett School Police resource officer will be monitoring the data in realtime and will make the ultimate decision whether a citation will be issued. It would be mailed to registered owner of the vehicle.
"That's the ultimate goal is to not have any violations because that's the best thing for our students," says Roach.
She says the district will begin issuing warnings to violators in the next two weeks during the break-in period. Citations will then be issued after students return from winter break in January.
Violators will be fined $300 for the first offense, $750 for the second, and up to $1,000 for the third and subsequent offenses within five years. If a law enforcement officer were to pull over a violator, the fine is up to $1,000 and six points on their driver's license.
RedFlex will receive half of the money from the school-issued citations while the school district and Gwinnett County will split the other half.
