State regulators approve Georgia Power rate hike

Georgia Public Service Commission approves higher rates for customers (WSBTV.com News Staff)

Georgia Power’s 2.7 million customers will, indeed, see higher bills beginning in January.

By a vote of 4-1, the Georgia Public Service Commission has approved the utility’s revised request to raise power rates 2.5 percent in 2023, then 4.5 percent in 2024 and 2025.

The average customer will see a $3.60 increase in their monthly bills beginning next month.

For Georgia Power, it means a boost of $1.8 billion over three years. That is about $1 billion less than Georgia Power had previously requested.

Under the utility’s original request, customers’ bills would have risen an average of $14 a month in 2023.

Georgia Power had said costs to do business remain high. The company also cited the needs for new investments and innovation.

The only “no” vote came from PSC Commissioner Lauren “Bubba” McDonald.
