ATLANTA, GA — Lawmakers have focused on a number of initiatives focused on school safety since last year’s deadly shooting at Barrow County’s Apalachee High School.
Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns outlined his school safety initiatives at the state capitol Monday afternoon.
“The People’s House is committed to leaving no stone unturned when it comes to securing their safety, and enacting measures that will save lives and support our students’ wellbeing at every stage of their academic careers and beyond.”
The Republican has already indicated he’d like to work on a statewide model allowing schools and other government agencies to share information on students.
The legislation requires schools join a new student information sharing database and that districts should use an anonymous reporting app for concerns.
The bill also increases the punishments for making terroristic threats and offers tax incentives for families buying safe storage equipment.
This legislation would be on top of the $50 million dollars Governor Kemp proposed for one-time safety grants for schools to beef up their physical security protocols.
