A Hall County man is breathing a sigh of relief after the return of his car and his dog.

On Sunday, a woman wearing only a towel stole Matt Sander’s silver 2012 Hyundai Elantra from the driveway of his Flowery Branch home with his dog, a white Pomeranian named Bear, inside. Early Monday morning, Braselton Police located the car and the dog at a nearby hotel.

EMT’s responded to 911 call made by the woman at the Best Western Braselton Inn.

“She stated she was having heart problems—had been throwing up blood and things of that nature,” said Braselton Police Chief Terry Esco.

Esco said that EMT’s noticed immediately that she had some type of mental issue and were unable to establish the woman’s identity.

“They noticed the car in front of the motel room so they ran the tag and when they ran the tag it came back stolen from this person in Flowery Branch,” Esco said.

Sanders was shortly contacted and retrieved his vehicle and his dog, which was unharmed, from the Braselton Inn, roughly 9 miles from where the car was originally stolen.

Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Derrick Booth said Braselton Police transported the woman to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for evaluation.

“At this point this afternoon, the Sheriff’s office tells me no determination yet on what if any charges will be filed against her,” said Booth.

According to Chief Esco, “Right now we’re just waiting to get with the DA’s office to find out how far we need to go with this because of her mental state.”

On Sunday at approximately 8:24 AM, Hall County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a stolen dog and car. Deputies met with Matt Sanders who told deputies he put his dog in the car, started it, and went back inside his home for a moment. When he returned he found the car doors were locked and a woman wearing only a towel was sitting in the driver’s seat. Sanders attempted to reason with the woman to get out of the vehicle or at the very least let his dog go. The woman then drove through Sander’s yard and sped off.

The woman’s name is not being released at this time due to HIPAA protections.
