Atlanta police are still searching for the driver of a red Dodge Nitro who intentionally hit a bicyclist and dragged him 50 feet.
Friends of Greg Germani are still in disbelief that anyone would hurt him. An avid cyclist, Germani remains in the intensive care unit at Grady Memorial Hospital.
A witness told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri the incident began when the driver of the Dodge turned from Flagler Avenue onto Montgomery Ferry Road and nearly hit Germani.
"The cyclist turned around and came back to the Nitro, beside the Nitro, to have words with the driver," the witness said.
The witness said the men argued before Germani, 50, rode off, and that's when the drive made a four-point turn to chase him.
"She just screamed at me and said, 'There's a car going down the street about 80 mph,'" witness Bill Kennedy said.
Kennedy's wife saw the SUV speed by. Witnesses said the driver hit Germani and dragged him and his bicycle 50 feet before he ended up wedged under a parked SUV.
"What a maniac. What an animal to take that vindictiveness," Kennedy said.
Friends said Germaniruns a history site called Atlanta Time Machine and promotes local music events. They said he suffered a brain injury and broken bones.
Investigators and the community are focused on finding the driver who would target someone so defenseless.
A witness said the driver sped off on Rock Springs and almost hit another driver as he got away.
Police believe the Nitro could have some damage to its front right side. They're hoping surveillance footage from a nearby home will show what happened.
