After just one season the Indianapolis Colts are expected to release former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, according to the Associated Press. The move would save Indianapolis about $17 million in salary cap space for next season.

Ryan struggled mightily during his lone season with the Colts. He dealt with two head coaches, two offensive coordinators and an offensive line that allowed the NFL’s second-highest sack total (60). Ryan was sacked 40 times and was benched twice as the Colts finished with a 4-12-1 record.

His next career move is uncertain as he’ll turn 38 in May. The Colts have the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft and are widely expected to draft a quarterback. A return to the Falcons seems unlikely as the team signed former Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke to a two-year deal on Tuesday. The team also has second-year player Desmond Ritter as their current starter. Ryan played 14 seasons in Atlanta and is the franchise’s career leader in all major passing categories.

“I still love playing and I think obviously, not committed to anything, here, wherever, I have to see how it shakes out,” Ryan said after the season ended in January. “I still feel like there’s a lot of good football in my body.”

Ryan ranks fifth all time in completions (5,551), seventh in yards passing (62,792) and ninth in touchdown passes (381).
