Clark Howard: Atlantans ‘making it work’ following I-85 bridge collapse

GDOT: I-85 bridge construction could be complete by June

Since the I-85 bridge collapse last Thursday, people in metro Atlanta are showing how resilient they are by working around the literal "road block" they face.

A massive fire caused part of I-85 to collapse and shut down the interstate in both directions indefinitely. Crews are focusing on repairing Piedmont Road to ease traffic congestion.

WSB Consumer expert Clark Howard says the businesses around the area are facing tough times.

“You think about businesses along Piedmont Road; businesses at Ansley Mall. There are a lot of businesses that because of the disruption in commuting patterns are going to suffer. Their employees are going to suffer,” Clark says.

He adds that we have really shown our strength during this stressful time. “We underestimate our ability as people to adapt and so far, people in Atlanta have shown real versatility in getting around.”

“Even those who had a tough time will keep testing different routes and will make it work.”

The I-85 North viaduct that was destroyed by fire on Thursday was last inspected by the state in August 2015.

The results refer not solely to the portion that collapsed but to the much longer bridge of which the collapsed section is a part.
