Some business owners in Gwinnett County say illegal used car sales are on the rise.  State law prohibits unlicensed dealers from selling cars along the side of the road in places like shopping centers and empty parking lots.

Rick Pittman owns AR Motorsports in Lawrenceville.  Pittman tells Channel 2 Action News he inspects all of his cars before they land on the lot and for many he offers a warranty.

"You see cars...Walmart, gas stations side of the road in front of they yard....that does affect our business, " said Pittman.

He and other business owners want law enforcement to crack down on the so-called curbstoning.  Curbstoning is when unlicensed dealers pretending to be a private party to evade regulation.

"They don't pay Georgia sales tax and that does affect our economy," said Pittman.

The city of Lilburn and Gwinnett County police quality of life officers say they are trying to figure out how to better enforce the law.  However, Pittman says his business will suffer while this activity continues.

"They're gonna run. They sold you a bad car....they're gonna change their phone number. You're not going to know where their address is....where they live," said Pittman.
