WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two Georgia counties are among the fastest-growing counties in the entire country percentage-wise, according to a Census population estimate.

Dawson County and Lumpkin County both saw 5.8% jumps in population between 2021 and 2022.

The counties, both in north Georgia, were in a tie for third place among all the fastest-growing counties in the country, based on percentage.

On July 1, 2021, the estimated population in Dawson County was 28,475 while one year later that population was 30,138. While in the same time frame, Lumpkin County went from a population of 32,890 to 34,796.

The Census said the pattern in migration in 2021 saw people migrating to small counties while in 2022, that pattern reversed.

Maricopa County, Arizona saw the largest increase in residents, adding 56,831 people, while Los Angeles County saw the largest population decline in 2022, decreasing by 90,704 people.
