In Georgia, it seems we're usually talking about pea-sized hail. That was not the case Thursday afternoon in Union County.
Andy Kives was traveling on 515 between Blue Ridge and Ellijay when a small hail storm quickly became huge.
"All of a sudden, it was literally the size of baseballs, grapefruits. I mean, there are holes in my windows, shattered my sunroof. There's only one good panel left on my car," said Kives.
Kives says there was no question, he was scared and everybody was rushing to pull off the road.
"Right next to me was a father and his little son on a Harley. They pulled off to the side. I mean they were just getting pounded by hail. I mean grapefruit-sized hail of course. They had helmets on. Obviously, they didn't feel good," said Kives.
"Hail was hitting the roof of my car so hard the headliner was collapsing and retracting with every big grapefruit-sized, baseball-sized hail thing that would hit the roof," said Kives.
He admits this is a first for Georgia.
"I've never seen anything that big in Georgia, period," said Kives.
Now, his biggest problem is finding a car to rent with Memorial Day just around the corner.
"I called my State Farm agent right after that because I immediately needed a rental car because I had holes in my back windshield. I told her about it and I was like- I've never seen anything like this before, and neither had she," said Kives.
