Fired N. Atlanta principal: It’s just power and ego gone wild

The interim principal of North Atlanta High School, who was abruptly told Friday to turn in his keys and get out, says decision to let him go is political and egotistical.

"There (are) some strange dynamics occurring on the board and I can't help but wonder if that's where it's coming from," Mark Mygrant told Channel 2 Action News in an exclusive interview Sunday. "I think just personally it's just power and ego gone wild."

Mygrant thinks he was fired because of what he calls anonymous allegations that two of his hires are accused of being racists for trying to force minority students out of the school.

He wants APS to clear his name and has 25 pages of documents he will present to administrators on Tuesday to prove it.

Friday Mygrant was told to turn in his keys and get out. His assistant principal and academy leaders were reassigned.

Mygrant retired as North Atlanta's principal, but was asked to come out of retirement earlier this year until his replacement could be found.

That new principal is not supposed to take over until Oct. 29th.

"I was ready just to retire and ride off into the sunset. And would have been prepared to do that Friday, until I learned that the others had been treated this way," Mygrant said.

There were a total of six leaders replaced, but two are set to retire.

Parents and students are furious. A demonstration is planned Tuesday at North Atlanta's campus.

Atlanta Public School spokesperson Steven Alford says they let Mygrant go to give new principal Dr. Howard Taylor a fresh start.

"It was critical that we start transitioning to leadership right now," says Alford.

Meanwhile, eight new interim school leaders have been brought in to help run the school.

Parents are telling Channel 2 Action News they were surprised by the replacements and want answers because they say "the school year was going well."

Tomorrow night, the Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent, Erroll B. Davis, Jr. is scheduled to meet with parents at North Atlanta High School about the leadership transition. The meeting is at 6 p.m.
