Kennel owners in Cherokee County now face criminal charges for how they treated hundreds of dogs in their care.
63-year-old Joy Wise and her 79-year-old husband Guerry Wise are charged with 366 misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals. The Cherokee Tribune reports they are due to be arraigned next month.
The Cherokee County sheriff's office says Joy Wise was initially cited for violating county ordinances but the living conditions at Heavenly Farm Kennel are so egregious, criminal charges are warranted.
As a condition of her bond, Mrs. Wise may not breed, sell or even own an animal.
The hundreds of dogs seized last month are now being cared for at the Cherokee County Animal Shelter, but they cannot be put up for adoption until this case is resolved in court.
